Signs of Premature Aging

Sun Spots

Sunspots, also known as age spots and liver spots, are flat patches on the skin caused by spending many years in the sun. Acne spots may show up on your face, forearms or back.

They tend to appear around or after the age of 40. People with fairer skin, like Fitzpatrick type 1 and 2, may see these sun spot developments earlier.

Gaunt Hands

As we get older, our skin gets thinner and lacks some essential structural proteins, like collagen which gives the skin its shape.

As you age, your hands may start appearing more veiny, thin and firming. Wrinkles in the skin’s surface provide a way for everyone to check their age.

It is usually not possible to objectively measure when hands start looking older because most people tend to notice it during their late 30s and early 40s.

Inflammation / Hyperpigmentation along Chest

Many people develop fine, patchy skin discoloration on their chest as they get older.

These areas of differing pigment can be caused by sun damage. Similar to sunspots, these are caused by the cells in your skin being damaged due to prolonged exposure from too much sun.

This kind of hyperpigmentation is not always caused by aging but can also be the result of eczema or other skin conditions. This can make your skin look lighter in some spots.

There isn’t a fixed age when eczema typically appears.

Dry / Itchy Skin

Dry or itchy skin may start to happen more frequently if you are aging. This is because old skin is thinner and needs to be hydrated.

As you get closer to your 40s, it can be more difficult for the skin to hold on to moisture and this may cause a number of changes.

Wrinkles / Sagging

wrinkles is a sign of aging

As you enter your 30s, your skin slows down the production of collagen. This protein is largely responsible for the shape and firmness of your skin. Collagen also helps keep it elastic and ‘full’.

Wrinkles and sagging are more prevalent without enough collagen in the skin. You might notice this happening a lot in areas around frequently used muscles, like the forehead or where you’re more exposed to light.

Wrinkles are hard to define at what point they are considered premature. Some people first notice them in their 20s, others younger or later.

However, aging is not always the cause. Dirt and dehydration could also be factors.

Hair Loss

Hair loss can happen as the stem cells in your hair follicles die off. This happens as a direct consequence of several factors, such as hormonal changes, environmental factors, genetics and diet.

As people grow older, hair loss and graying can become a common concern. Up to 40% of women between the ages of 70-79 experience hair loss, while 50% of men aged 50-69 do.

Causes of Premature Skin Aging

There are a few different things that will directly affect the appearance of these symptoms on your body.

Smoking

smoking can cause premature skin aging

The toxins in cigarette smoke can cause wrinkles, dry skin, and other signs of premature aging.

Sun Exposure & Tanning

sun exposure can make your skin tan

Tanning beds and exposure to the sun can cause wrinkles. They damage your skin cells by penetrating them with UV rays, which has the effect of mutating their DNA.

Genes

There are some very rare genetic conditions, called progeria that can cause what seems to be aging symptoms in childhood or early puberty.

There is a rare condition called Werner syndrome. It causes wrinkled skin, graying hair and balding to develop when the sufferer is still young between 13 and 30 years old.

Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome is an even rarer condition, affecting 1 in 8 million babies.

Children with this syndrome have a difficult time with growth, and have very thin limbs. The average life expectancy for these children is 13 years old.

Sleep Habits

Another habits that make you look older is sleep. When it comes to sleep, everybody needs a break. Your body can’t do everything you need it to do without a rest and that’s why people need to get an appropriate amount of sleep. One of many functions is the renewal and regeneration of cells in your body.

One small study has indicated that poor sleep quality is connected to signs of aging & a diminished skin barrier function.

Diet

Alcohol & Caffeine Intake

Drinking alcohol excessively leads to dehydration, which over time will lead to loose skin and wrinkles.

Despite conflicting research about the effects of coffee on wrinkles, caffeine may have a similar effect. Some studies claim that prolonged caffeine consumption may lead to premature aging due to its reactive effects in the skin.

Environment

environment factor

Pigment spots and wrinkles can be triggered or worsened by environmental pollutants.

The skin that directly comes into contact with the air is affected by the chemicals and toxins in your everyday environment.

Stress

stress can cause premature skin aging

A stressful lifestyle can raise levels of inflammation in your body and this is why some people experience a “fight or flight” response to stress. Chronically high levels of these hormones will not only make you age faster, but can also affect sleep patterns and everything else about your well-being.

It is natural that over time, your skin can lose its radiance. One way to preserve your youthful glow is by minimizing these habits that cause premature skin aging.
